Directions for Making a Simple Headband with a Cross Stitched Design.

Find patterns for headbands here.

Please scroll down below the photo for the instructions.

Directions for making a Simple 2" Wide Headband:

Click here for directions for 1" wide headband

Please Note:

**Finished headband is about 2" wide when using the 14 count Aida. If you want a narrower headband, stitch design on a higher count fabric(18 count fabric will create a 1 1/2" wide design) and adjust the lining and interfacing accordingly.

**This headband uses light blue cloth that compliments the cross stitch design used in this tutorial. Any color cloth that matches your chosen design should be used.

**These directions assume that the crafter knows basic hand and machine sewing.

Materials:

Headband Template (click here to download and print two templates)

Stitched Design (These directions call for a design that measures 12" x 2". When stitching, center design on fabric at least 18" x 4".)

Matching fabric for lining (about 18" x 3")

Lightweight fusible interfacing (about 18" x 3")

Non-Roll Elastic (1/2" wide, approx. 7")

Basic Sewing Supplies: Sewing machine, scissors, pins, iron, ironing board, pressing cloth to protect cross stitched piece when ironing, etc

Directions:

Step #1) Download, print, and cut out 2 headband templates. Tape them together at center to make a full sized headband pattern. Center cross stitched design on pattern and trim to size. Using pressing cloth to protect stitching, iron out any wrinkles or creases that may have occurred during stitching.  Using pattern again, cut out interfacing and lining. Trim the 2 long sides of lining about 1/8".

Step #2) Following manufacture's instructions, apply the interfacing to the back of stitching. Turn under long edges along stitching, and following the pattern, curve ends slightly. Press.

Step #3) Press under the long sides of lining 1/2".Because you trimmed it 1/8" on each side, it should be slightly narrower than front stitched piece. Pin front and lining together with right sides facing out. Turn under ends about 1/2". Insert one end of elastic into one end of headband. Pin in place. Insert other end of elastic into other end of headband. Pin in place. Adjust length of elastic to fit your head (or head of intended wearer!)  Carefully straight stitch along sides of headband, and zig-zag stitch across ends several times to firmly secure elastic.  Enjoy!

Directions for making a 1" wide Headband:

Materials:

Stitched Design (These directions call for a design that measures 12" x 1". When stitching, center design on fabric at least 18" x 2".)

Matching fabric for lining (about 18" x 2")

Lightweight fusible interfacing (about 18" x 2")

Non-Roll Elastic (1/2" wide, approx. 7")

Basic Sewing Supplies: Sewing machine, scissors, pins, iron, ironing board, pressing cloth to protect cross stitched piece when ironing, etc

Directions:

Trim the stitched design to within 5 stitch spaces along the 18" sides. Apply the fusible interfacing to the back. Turn under long edges along stitching, and following the pattern, curve ends slightly to 1/2" wide. Press front to crease.

Trim lining 1/8" on long sides. Turn under 18" side so that lining is slightly narrower than front. Follow step #3 above as per 2" wide headband.
