Directions for Making a Check Book Cover Please scroll down below the photo for the instructions. Click here for this free Check Book Cover pattern This pattern is from a detail of "Three Pots of Tulips" by Monet Any Eyeglass Case size pattern on this website will fit these directions.
Stitch up something beautiful for your checks. These lovely checkbook covers are perfect gifts...for yourself or someone else! ___________________________________________________________ Please Note: **These directions assume that the crafter knows basic hand and machine sewing. **Use ½" seams throughout. **See two variations at the end of the page. **If the background of a pattern is mostly of one color, instead of stitching it, choose an Aida or linen that closely matches the background color. The image above uses this technique. The white background of the design was not stitched. Please notice that the light pink background around the tulip blossoms was stitched. Materials: *Cross Stitch Piece: Stitched design size needed: 49 x 95 stitches, 14 ct; or 63 x 123 stitches, 18 ct Trim designs to within ½". Press flat, using pressing cloth. Please note: Many designs of these sizes are available at www.crossstitchpro.com Any Eyeglass Case size patterns will fit these directions. * 1 piece of cloth, 7 1/2" x 5 1/2", this piece and cross stitched design will make the front of the checkbook. * 1 piece of cloth, 7 ½" x 8" for inside. * 2 pieces of cloth, (2) 7 ½' x 3 5/8" for pockets. * 4 pieces medium weight fusible interfacing, (2)7 ½' x 8", and (2) 7 ½" x 3 5/8" *Iron-on Adhesive Tape, super weight, ("Therm O Web", HeatnBond, Hem brand was used here) You will need only a small amount, about 5". *Pressing cloth to protect cross stitched piece while ironing. Basic sewing items: matching thread, needle, scissors, iron and ironing board, sewing machine, etc. Directions: 1) Pin cross stitched design and 7 ½" x 5" piece together at long side, write sides facing. Carefully stitch along border of design. Using pressing cloth, press seam flat and trim piece to 7 ½" x 8". Following manufacturer’s instructions, fuse interfacing to the wrong side.
2) Following manufacturer’s instructions, fuse interfacing to the wrong side of the 3 other pieces of cloth.. 2) The cross stitched piece will be the outside. The other 7 ½" x 8" piece will be the inside. The two 7 ½" x 3 5/8" pieces are the inside pockets to slip the checks and the check register into.
3) Fold under a long side of each pocket piece ½". Press and sew.
4) Place the inside, face up on the work surface. Position the two pockets on the inside piece, face up and seams facing inward, 7/1/2" sides matching. Place the outside piece on top, with the wrong side face up. Pin in place. Starting at an 7 1/2" side, sew around outside edge, leaving a space large enough to turn. (About 4")
5) Trim inside piece seam to 1/4". Trim pocket seams to 3/8". Trim corners. Turn piece, using scissor to point corners. When completely turned, press check book cover using the pressing cloth to protect the cross stitching. Fold in half, press again to flatten.
6) Slip checks into one pocket and the check register into the other. Enjoy!
**Variation #1: For a non-cross stitch Check Book Cover, choose some lovely cloth and substitute a 7 1/2" x 8" piece for the cross stitched front. **Instead of sewing a piece of cloth to the cross stitched design to make the front, when cross stitching, position the design so that there is enough Aida to make the entire front. (The front will be one piece of Aida, not Aida/cloth)
